Final Concept

This week the whole focused their attention on finalising the concept and details of the project. The aim concept is stumbling across objects that when interacted with reveal content.

The object:
It was decided that the object in question would be lanterns. Nano Nagle was was known as the Lady of the Lantern. This was because she would, at night, walk through the city on her way to nurse the sick with a lantern. The lantern has now become her symbol. Another aspect to using the Lantern is the use of light. Light can be used as a means to reveal information.

There will be three Lanterns scattered around the site.

These lanterns are then stumbled upon by visitors. Once the light is turned on, content will be displayed. Visitors are prompted to turn on the light through sensors that detect they are near. The three stages are:

Stage 1
Nano Nagles life and work. This stage will depict the work that Nano Nagle was involved in, whether it be nursing the sick or educating Irelands youth. This section will involve an audio and visual display. We want this to be in the form of a projection onto a wall that contains video footage of Nano Nagle.

Stage 2
Penal Laws and 18th century Ireland. This stage will depict the time in which Nano Nagle lived. We quickly decided we wanted to have the penal laws included in this stage, we also decided that text would be most suitable to way. This stage will involve light illuminating the text. The idea was influenced by industrial designer Samson Jones's project Ecco Luce, a light emitting wallpaper.

For this stage we want to have a grid of seemingly random letter, however once the lantern is activated, light is used to display hidden sentences within. The plan is for this sentences to be the Penal Laws. We are also looking at having additional content displayed below the text.

Stage 3
Legacy. This stage will represent the legacy which Nano Nagle left behind her. We barinstormed the best way in which to represent this. We decided that this will be done by showing the visitor the spread of the Presentation order throughout the world. We will do this using a large map. At this stage visitors will be prompted to turn off the light, symbolising Nano's death. Once the light is turned off, lights will begin to appear on the map. As Nano Nagles light goes out, it spreads around the world.

Overall we are very happy with the development and final concept. The use of Lanterns and Light to illuminate content gives each stage and the overall project a common thread.
